Wall Street ran for cover in the worst sell-off in seven months after Saudi Arabian forces fired on anti-government protesters and disappointing economic news at home jarred the markets.
Two stock indexes fell below their recent milestones of recovery. The Dow Jones industrial average dropped below the psychologically important 12,000 barrier, shedding 228.48 to end at 11,984.61.
The Standard & Poor’s-500 stock index fell below its key 1,300-mark to 1,295.11, off 24.91. The Nasdaq was just a single point from backsliding from its 2,700-point milestone, ending at 2,701.02, down 50.70.
