Homeland Security Says It Has Every Right To Spy On Peaceful Protest Groups

Homeland Security Says It Has Every Right To Spy On Peaceful Protest Groups

What First Amendment?

The Department Of Homeland Security has concluded that it is perfectly reasonable for it to spy on dozens of peaceful advocacy groups and monitor scores of lawful protests and political rallies in the name of national security.
The ACLU details the DHS’ response to a complaint the group filed with the DHS’s Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties (OCRCL).

The ACLU demanded an investigation into whether DHS officials abused their authority by improperly collecting and disseminating information regarding political demonstrations, following revelations that Homeland Security’s Federal Protective Service (FPS) had been engaging in such activity dating back to 2006.

The OCRCL has refused to disclose the memorandum detailing its investigative findings, however it sent a letter to the ACLU last week reaffirming that it sees no wrongdoing in the actions whatsoever, while admitting that there was no adequate differentiation between civil activist and violent extremist organizations.

“We strongly disagree with the OCRCL’s finding that FPS acted within its authority to compile and disseminate a list tracking the political activities of advocacy groups.” The ACLU states on its website.

“No agency or department in government has the right to monitor the peaceful and lawful political activities and speech of Americans.” the statement continues.

“Protection from this type of government monitoring is exactly the reason why the First and Fourth Amendments were adopted… The government must immediately stop any ongoing programs or activities that monitor lawful political speech and advocacy of American citizens.” it concludes.

Of course, asking the DHS to investigate itself on these matters is the equivalent of asking Charles Manson to chair his own parole hearing. The ACLU could not have expected any different result.

The federal government now openly admits that it spies on Americans and compiles lists of subversives if they choose to engage in their Constitutional rights.

Welcome to the new America.

Supreme Court rules for anti-gay church over military funeral protests

Supreme Court rules for anti-gay church over military funeral protests

March 2, 2011

A Kansas church that attracted nationwide attention for its angry, anti-gay protests at the funerals of U.S. military members has won its appeal at the Supreme Court, an issue testing the competing constitutional rights of free speech and privacy.

The justices, by an 8-1 vote, said Wednesday that members of Westboro Baptist Church had a right to promote what they call a broad-based message on public matters such as wars. The father of a fallen Marine had sued the small church, saying those protests amounted to targeted harassment and an intentional infliction of emotional distress.

“Speech is powerful. It can stir people to action, move them to tears of both joy and sorrow, and — as it did here — inflict great pain. On the facts before us, we cannot react to that pain by punishing the speaker,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the majority.

At Clinton Speech: Military and CIA Veteran Bloodied, Bruised and Arrested for Standing Silently

At Clinton Speech: Military and CIA Veteran Bloodied, Bruised and Arrested for Standing Silently

We Must Protest Over There So They Don't Protest Over Here - Red

As Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave her speech at George Washington University yesterday condemning governments that arrest protestors and do not allow free expression, 71-year-old Ray McGovern was grabbed from the audience in plain view of her by police and an unidentified official in plain clothes, brutalized and left bleeding in jail. She never paused speaking. When Secretary Clinton began her speech, Mr. McGovern remained standing silently in the audience and turned his back. Mr. McGovern, a veteran Army officer who also worked as a C.I.A. analyst for 27 years, was wearing a Veterans for Peace t-shirt.

Blind-sided by security officers who pounced upon him, Mr. McGovern remarked, as he was hauled out the door, "So this is America?" Mr. McGovern is covered with bruises, lacerations and contusions inflicted in the assault.

Mr. McGovern is being represented by the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund (PCJF). "It is the ultimate definition of lip service that Secretary of State Clinton would be trumpeting the U.S. government's supposed concerns for free speech rights and this man would be simultaneously brutalized and arrested for engaging in a peaceful act of dissent at her speech," stated attorney Mara Verheyden-Hilliard of the PCJF.

Mr. McGovern now works for Tell the Word, a publishing arm of the ecumenical Church of the Saviour in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, D.C.

Thousands of Wisconsin labor supporters protest

Thousands of Wisconsin labor supporters protest

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Chippewa.com

MADISON (AP) — Officials report no incidents of violence or disorder in and around the Wisconsin Capitol, where thousands of protesters gathered.

The Wisconsin Department of Administration estimates that 10,000 protesters demonstrated outside the Capitol on Tuesday, with 3,000 more filling the Capitol Rotunda. The labor supporters are protesting Gov. Scott Walker’s budget repair bill, which would strip most state and local workers of collective bargaining rights, except when negotiating salary.

The Capitol and surrounding square are being patrolled by Madison police and Dane County Sheriff’s deputies. DOA officials say there were no incidents between protesters and police.

Protesters outside the Capitol started to leave around 1 p.m., but many remained within the Capitol beating drums and occasionally chanting.

WeAreChange Confronts Dick Cheney on 9/11 Stand Down Order

The testimony of Norman Mineta before the 9/11 Commission leaves compelling questions about former Vice President Dick Cheney’s actions on the day of 9/11. Then Transportation Secretary Mineta witnessed Cheney refuse to contradict an apparent standdown order as an aide warned of something incoming at the Pentagon. Cheney has given conflicting reports about what time he entered the PEOC bunker. Mineta later confirmed his suppressed 9/11 Commission testimony and refuted Cheney’s account of arriving later.

Yesterday, WeAreChange.org confronted Cheney about these questions, which he refused to address.

“Hey Mr. Cheney, what did you do in the underground bunker on 9/11? Dick Cheney we know what you did on 9/11 with the standdown order. Norman Mineta testified against you on the 9/11 Commission report. What happened on 9/11?”

When he was being forced out, WeAreChange.org founder Luke Rudkowski calmly asked security not to push him; security backed off after asking him, ‘Are you being polite?’
