Russia urges immediate Libya ceasefire

Russia urges immediate Libya ceasefire

Russian defense minister has called for immediate ceasefire in Libya as US-led military coalition forces escalates their aerial and sea attacks on the north African country.

“Russia wants to see an immediate ceasefire in Libya and the start of political negotiations,” Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov told visiting US Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Tuesday.

The call comes after Russia’s prime minister denounced a UN Security Council resolution authorizing a military offensive against Libya.

Vladimir Putin says the resolution is defective and flawed, and resembles “the medieval calls for crusades.”

The Russian premier also accused the US of acting without conscience or logic.

MOSCOW — Known for sometime sticking his foot in his mouth, US Vice President Joe Biden delivered another trademark gaffe Thursday by mangling the name of Russia's most famous prisoner Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

In a somber 40-minute address to Moscow State University students that generated more giggles than rounds of applause, Biden tried to bash Russia for putting Khodorkovsky behind bars on what many believe are politically motivated charges.

Russian Military Claims Libya Air Strikes Did Not Happen

The Russian military claims that the supposed air strikes launched by Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi against protesters last week did not happen, suggesting that the key event seized upon by the global media as a justification for a “humanitarian” military intervention was a contrived hoax.

According to Russia Today correspondent Irina Galushko, top officials from Russia’s Joint Chiefs of Staff monitoring images from space satellites have concluded that, “Some of the reports made by western media are not entirely corresponding to the pictures they are getting.”

Specifically, the supposed air strikes that took place on February 22 over Benghazi and Tripoli, which were widely reported by the likes of the BBC and Al Jazeera, were not registered by the Russian military chiefs studying the images coming in from the satellites.

The pictures show that, “nothing of that sort has been going on on the ground,” states Galushko, adding that there is also no evidence from footage shot by television cameras which suggests that any airborne attacks took place.

Russia’s top diplomat has today dismissed plans to create a no-fly zone over Libya as embattled leader Moammar Gaddafi unleashed bombing raids, special forces and army troops in a desperate bid to retain power.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov described the idea of imposing limits on Libyan air space as ‘superfluous’ and said world powers must instead focus on fully using the sanctions that the UN Security Council approved over the weekend.

David Cameron and his counterparts in the U.S. and Australia had hoped that the military tactic – used successfully for years in northern Iraq – would prevent Gaddafi from bombing his own people.
