Radiation spreads to China as crisis likely to continue for “a long time”

Low levels of radioactive material iodine-131 were detected Saturday in Heilongjiang Province, north of Beijing, China’s National Nuclear Emergency Coordination Committee said.

The radioactive material was likely to have come from the tsunami-damaged Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan, the agency said.

However, since the radiation level was below one-hundred-thousandth of the average natural background radiation, it did not pose a risk to public health or the environment, and no protective measures were required, the agency said in a statement.

Repair work at the troubled Fukushima nuclear plant has continued into a third week. More countries are beginning to detect tiny amounts of radioactive iodine and cesium in the air that have drifted across oceans from the overheated nuclear reactors in Fukushima, where a tsunami following a 9.0-magnitude earthquake knocked out its crucial cooling system on March 11.

The Austrian capital of Vienna detected very low concentrations of radioactive particles Friday, believed to have come from Fukushima, the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) said.

The detected radioactive materials were iodine-131 and cesium-137, and the tiny amount would pose no threat to human health, the Austrian agency said.
It was the first time the two radioactive materials were detected in the country since the quake struck Japan.

Sea water samples taken from about 330 meters south of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant on Japan’s east coast showed radioactive iodine 1,250.8 times above legal limit near the drain outlets of the reactors, local media reported Saturday.

The reading was taken on Friday morning, recording the highest radiation level so far from the surveys begun this week, plant owner Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said.

If You Say “Protest” On A Phone In China, It Cuts Off Automatically

China is tightening up its online censorship even more, the Times reports.

The story recounts an eye-opening anecdote: a Chinese entrepreneur was on the phone with his girlfriend, and quipped, quoting Shakespeare: “The lady doth protest too much.” Upon the word “protest,” the phonecall cut off. He was speaking in English, but this has also happened to people speaking in Mandarin, so it’s not just a one-off.

This and other events like Gmail being blocked in China show that, in the wake of protests in the Middle East and elsewhere, the Chinese government is tightening up its control over the internet even more. (This has Chinese internet stocks rising.)

It also shows the amazing technical prowess of China’s censors: they’re able to monitor and speech-recognize millions of phone conversations, in English and Mandarin, in real time, and cut them off. It is an amazing technological feat. Meanwhile Burma, a China ally and one of the world’s most reclusive dictatorships, is cracking down on Skype, which is one of the few gates to the outside world.

VPN services, which allow computer users to circumvent the “Great Firewall” are being increasingly disrupted, and it’s generally much harder now to access sites outside the firewall.

It’s hard to see a silver lining here. The Chinese government is clearly scared of online activism and is doing everything it can to clamp down, and this is affecting everyone beyond online activists.

China tests ‘missile-defense system’

China used a top-secret SC-19 anti-satellite (ASAT) missile in a test last year against a target missile as part of a missile-defense system that remains shrouded in secrecy.

The ASAT missile was fired against a new medium-range missile and details were disclosed in a State Department cable made public recently by WikiLeaks that included an outline of a diplomatic protest note to Beijing about both Chinese weapons programs.

The cable provides the first detailed U.S. assessment of what defense officials say is a major strategic advancement in China’s military buildup. It reveals that China’s anti-satellite system was developed for use not only against satellites but is part of a larger strategic missile-defense system.

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates offered to hold strategic talks with China on missile defenses, as well as space, nuclear and cyberweapons, during a recent visit to Beijing. The offer was rebuffed by China’s defense minister, who said only that it would be studied.

Billionaire investor George Soros has once again cited China’s dictatorship as the model for the rest of the world in a speech at an elite gathering in Europe.
Soros told the exclusive Travellers Club, that “China’s model of state capitalism, in which the interests of the individual are subordinated to those of the government, poses a danger if its example becomes“the envy of the world.”
“Perfect order and global governance are not realistic expectations.” Soros was reported to have said at the elite gentleman’s meeting in Paris.

“However, it is a sad fact that Western democracies provide less successful leadership than China.” he continued.

Soros is clearly imagining a world in which freedom has all but vanished, given that he believes anyone in Europe or the US could ever envy life in China.
Soros has repeatedly stated that he sees China as the model for a new financial world order, replacing the U.S., slowing economic growth and reducing living standards.



Soros has characterized the United States as a drag on the global economy because of the declining dollar, adding that a new global currency is required in the form of IMF special drawing rights – paper bonds printed by the global regulatory body.

He has also described gold as “the ultimate bubble”, advising against investing in it, while privately doubling his own gold holdings.

Soros is on a speaking tour of Europe promoting the European Council on Foreign Relations, which advocates a move toward global financial regulation and further integration within the European Union. He was a founding member of the elite globalist group.

“The world does need order, and that order needs maintenance.” Soros further told the Traveller’s Club. “The idea that markets can correct their excesses turned out to be false.” he said in an open attack on the free market.

Soros also spoke of a need for Europe to defend it’s single currency and re-order its financial structure “across borders”. He said the EU should be granted the power to “supervise and protect the banking system”, and “also to guarantee banks that become insolvent”.

Soros pointed to a difficulty in seeing this brand of economic globalism come to fruition, because of increased resistance.

“The authors of the euro knew that it was an incomplete construction,” Soros said. “They could be confident that when deficiencies became apparent, the political will would be there to overcome them. Now, political will is difficult to summon.” he said.

UN must condemn China ‘one child’ policy: Lawmaker

WASHINGTON – UN SECRETARY General Ban Ki Moon must step up public condemnation of China’s ‘one-child’ policy and investigate the alleged use of forced abortions to carry it out, a key US lawmaker said on Monday.

‘To fail to speak out against what is by far the worst gender-based violence in history would make a mockery of the UN’s claim to promote women,’ Republican Representative Chris Smith said in an appeal to Mr Ban.

Mr Smith also urged Mr Ban to direct special UN envoys for violence against women, torture, and trafficking in persons to travel to China to investigate the way the policy is applied and its effects on women and girls.

Chinese police face down Middle East-style protests

BEIJING — Police and security officials displayed a massive show of force here and in other Chinese cities Sunday, trying to snuff out any hint of protests modeled on the uprisings in the Middle East. In Shanghai, several hundred people trying to gather were dispersed with a water truck.

Premier Wen Jiabao, meanwhile, used a morning Internet chat to promise to purge senior officials who are corrupt and to rein in inflation and rising home prices, directly addressing some of the most common grievances of ordinary Chinese.

Since the January uprising in Tunisia spurred similar anti-government protests across the Middle East and North Africa, threatening long-entrenched authoritarian regimes, China’s Communist rulers have reacted nervously, with both defensive and aggressive tactics.

Officials have used state-run media outlets to dismiss any comparisons with China while at the same time stepping up public comments on the need to address “social conflict” and to tackle problems such as the growing income disparity between the rich and poor. They have also detained a number of activists and human rights lawyers, blocked Internet search terms considered sensitive, such as “Egypt,” “Tunisia” and even U.S. Ambassador Jon Huntsman Jr.’s Chinese name. And they have issued warnings to foreign journalists to be mindful of reporting restrictions.

BEIJING — Postings circulating on the Internet have called on disgruntled Chinese to gather on Sunday in public places in 13 major cities to mark the “Jasmine Revolution” spreading through the Middle East.

The calls have apparently led the Chinese government to censor postings containing the word “jasmine” in an attempt to quell any potential unrest.

“We welcome… laid off workers and victims of forced evictions to participate in demonstrations, shout slogans and seek freedom, democracy and political reform to end ‘one party rule’,” one posting said.

The postings, many of which appeared to have originated on overseas websites run by exiled Chinese political activists, called for protests in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and 10 other major Chinese cities.

And more importantly, will China demonstrate to the US that the only way to prevent a ‘twitter revolution’ is to wrest control of the internet entirely?

If so, how many days before Big Brother is actively scouring through every single 100Base TX for daily keywords of choice with HBGary patiently waiting in the corridors to unleash a destructive DDOS at a moment’s notice?

Huge solar flare said to jam China communications

The strongest solar flare in four years disrupted radio communications in southern China, according to the China Meteorological Administration.
The solar flare, a huge explosion on the sun’s surface caused by magnetic activity, affected transmissions in southern China on Tuesday, Xinhua news agency reported, quoting the CMA.

The US space administration NASA confirmed that Monday’s solar flare was the largest in four years, and the event sparked predictions of heightened activity on the northern hemisphere of the sun.

“X-class flares are the most powerful of all solar events that can trigger radio blackouts and long-lasting radiation storms,” disrupting telecommunications and electric grids, NASA said.

France joins China in effort for end of the dollar

France, as current head of the Group of 20 countries, will help the transition to a global financial system based on ‘several international currencies’, French Economy Minister Christine Lagarde said today.

Lagarde, speaking ahead of a G20 finance ministers meeting in Paris on Friday and Saturday, said the world had to move on from the ‘non-monetary system’ it now has to one ‘based on several international currencies’.

Accordingly, France wants to see less need for countries, especially the emerging economies, to accumulate huge foreign reserves, she said.
