Iraqi forces shoot Sulaymanieh students

Security forces have opened fire on students in the Iraqi University of Sulaymanieh after they joined popular protests in the Iraqi Kurdistan region.

Following popular and student protests in Iraqi Kurdistan over poverty and unemployment as well as financial and administrative corruption, Sulaymanieh University students joined the protests on Saturday.

Iraqi security forces responded by targeting students, Tehran Kurdish Radio reported.

While ambulances have been reported to be rushing to the scene, no official figures have been released regarding the number of casualties. However, witnesses day at least ten people have been wounded and another ten have been detained.

On Thursday February 17, Sulaymanieh became the scene of popular protests which turned violent. Security forces attacked protesters, killing at least one person and wounding scores of others.
